Once described as “powerful yet fragile, devastatingly beautiful and beautifully devastating” by The Founder Magazine, UK-based quartet MIDAS FALL have carved a distinctive and captivating sound, fusing elements of electronica, post-rock, shoegaze and alternative rock with progressive and gothic undertones to create taut, shimmering soundscapes led by the hauntingly melancholic vocals of Elizabeth Heaton.

Forged in Edinburgh, Scotland and now based in the north of England, the eclectic collective – founding members Heaton and Rowan Burn (guitar, piano) with Steven Pellatt (drums/percussion/piano) and Chris Holland (bass) – has spent the past year composing the follow-up to their 2013-issued Wilderness full-length. Titled The Menagerie Inside, MIDAS FALL’s third long player was captured live at Red Wall Studios, mastered by Seattle legendary engineer Ed Brooks (Pearl Jam, Caspian, Fleet Foxes et al) and offers up ten sprawling tracks of sonic enormity. From the sorrowing echo of wilting violins in “Counting Colours,” to the emotionally gutting close of “Circus Performer,” the forty-six-minute epic is as heavy sonically as it is cerebrally. An introspective journey through dark and light, The Menagerie Inside is at once graceful, urgent and star-gazingly compelling. Cascading riffs ebb, flow and surge into rich, ethereal piano crescendos, the weight of Heaton’s delicate angelic resonance adding depth to her every echoing word. With The Menagerie Inside, MIDAS FALL manifests a sound and atmosphere that’s organic, emotionally stirring and habitually awe-inspiring, further verifying the strength of their songcraft and musicianship.

Comments the band of their latest creation, “We wanted to capture the energy of our live shows, so we took a different approach this time by recording the album live.”

The album will be released worldwide September 4th, 2015 on Monotreme Records in CD and digital download formats, as well as a limited edition 180-gram vinyl LP in black or translucent purple with black splatter, with a free album CD and poster inside.

Niagara to release new 3-track Vanillacola single in July with Fennesz and XIII remixes

Niagara photo

‘Vanillacola Re-Bottled’ is the upcoming release from Turin-Based experimental-pop duo Niagara, released on July 31st. Taken from the band’s vivacious second album ‘Don’t Take it Personally’, ‘Vanillacola’ is a nimble song that quickly shifts between new wave, fizzy pop and slippery footwork, all complemented by sweeping arrangements and booming electronics.

Listen to the track on The 405 website.

“It’s a pulsing, kinetic track, fraught at all times with abrasive mind-cleansing washes of sound, popping with computeroid bubblings, crashing drums and wheeling lances of high-register synth splashing the track with a sense of urgency as the vocals drop lyrics word-by-word” -The 405

‘Vanillacola’ comes with remixes by Austrian avant-garde master Christian Fennesz, as well as Italian producer XIII. Utilising some of the furthest extremities of the remix genre, while incorporating elements of electronica, psychedelia, cold-wave, both remixes expand on the aesthetic of the original and deliver a mesmerising yet brash work-out built on originality and authenticity.

Niagara is the collaborative project of artists/producers David Tomat and Gabriele Ottino. There is always a concept behind their music – this time the ongoing struggle to balance their desire to develop and exploit technology against the need to make technology more sympathetic to nature.

Instrumental trio STEARICA To Release Second Album, ‘Fertile’, worldwide on April 13th on Monotreme Records

Stearica photo

Torino-based instrumental trio’s powerful, adventurous second album, inspired by the squares of the Arab Spring and Barcelona’s Indignants

We are tremendously excited to welcome the AWESOME instrumental trio STEARICA to our roster!

Stream a track from their forthcoming album, ‘Fertile’ on The Obelisk now.

Over the past decade, instrumental trio STEARICA (Torino, Italy) have gained a cult following in the independent music underground, touring and performing live with the likes of Girls Against Boys, NoMeansNo, Dälek, Tarentel, Damo Suzuki, Coliseum, and forming the Acid Mothers Temple and Stearica Orchestra, which recorded a full-length album during the last day of a glorious one-month European tour together.

The key to STEARICA’s success is their powerful and adventurous sound, which is geometrical yet visceral: so intense that there is no need for words – much like “The Scream” by Edvard Munch. This is especially the case live, whether in clubs, crowded festivals such as “Primavera Sound” and “Villette Sonique” or in their live film soundtrack of the 1920 silent horror masterpiece “Der Golem” (commissioned by and performed at the National Cinema Museum and winner of the “Audience Award” in the 2014 Rimusicazioni Film Festival).

Their desire to go ‘beyond’ the traditional concept of a band has also led them to begin work on an ambitious multimedia show.

So the title of their 2008 debut album ‘Oltre’ (loosely translated as ‘beyond’) is very appropriate, and the response to ‘Oltre’ both at home (“…the best record produced in Italy in years” -Il Mucchio) and internationally (UK avant garde magazine The Wire featured STEARICA twice on its covermount CD) confirms this.

But with the new record “Fertile” the trio ventures even further into unexplored territories.

“Arriving in Barcelona to perform at Primavera Sound during the 2011 Indignants protests was the spark that ignited the inspiration for this record, and the Arab Spring revolutions unfolding across the Middle East as we wrote the album further fuelled our inspiration” (Francesco Carlucci).

STEARICA’s second album, Fertile, will be released worldwide by Monotreme Records in April – during Spring, the season of renewal and fertility in many parts of the world including the historical region where the sun rises known as ‘The ‘Fertile Crescent’, the birthplace of some of the earliest human civilizations, and also the scene of the revolutionary political uprisings that swept across the Middle East in 2011 known as the ‘Arab Spring’.

Both the concept of ‘fertile’ as ‘life-giving’ and the revolutionary impulses of the Arab Spring and the Indignants protests in Barcelona provided inspiration for this latest work from STEARICA, who begin their creative process by freely improvising for several hours. These torrents of sound are then edited into finished songs, just as a receding flood leaves behind fertility-bringing silt.

Produced by band member Francesco Carlucci, Fertile captures the primordial nature of the sound that the trio creates in their dynamic live performances. At times brutal, chaotic, mysterious, tranquil; Fertile is music born of our time: instinctively revolutionary.

The album will be available on CD and digital download formats, as well as a deluxe 180 gm double gatefold edition of 500 with a free limted edition A1 poster and album CD included inside: 300 copies on red and black vinyl and 200 copies on black vinyl. The artwork, by Albanian artist Moisi Guga, beautifully reflects the symbolic imagery of the concept of ‘Fertile’.

Physical product pre-orders from the Monotreme Records web shop will also receive free STEARICA pins and stickers whilst supplies last.

About Chasing Honeybees

‘Chasing Honeybees’ is a welcome progression of the pop genre, with nods to the pop music of the 60’s (including a modern update of the Phil Spector classic ‘And Then He Kissed Me’), 80’s shoegaze artists like The Cocteau Twins’, post-dubstep and R’N’B, with songs that drift serenely between heartache and ecstasy. “Shoegaze had a big impact on me – Kevin Shields is one of my favourite producers”, says Peter. “I’m also really inspired by Phil Spector, I love his dedication to finding the ‘perfect’ pop track.”

The music still retains the trademark lush production that Stumbleine is noted for, with strong melody lines and compelling lyrics penned by Violet Skies.

With Violet now involved in the songwriting, the likes of ‘Clip My Wings’ and ‘Just Tell Me’ sparkle and smoulder. Peter admits she’s given Stumbleine a face and stamped his music with her personality. “She makes the music stand out and has opened the door to a wider audience,” he says.

The collaboration has been so productive that a full-length follow-up album is scheduled for release in April 2014. “These five tracks give a good indication of what’s to come – I’ve got more aces lined up for the album. I’ve pushed myself much harder over the past year to create something a bit different”, says Peter.

With ‘Chasing Honeybees’, Peter has added Violet’s vitality to the dreamy essence of Stumbleine and the results are breathtaking.

Trophy Scars To Tour Europe with The ’68, Re-issue ‘Bad Luck’ Album On Vinyl

New Jersey quartet Trophy Scars, purveyors of darkly cinematic blues-rock opuses, embark on their first European tour in December, supporting Josh Scogin (The Chariot) and Michael McClellan’s acclaimed new duo project, ’68.

Trophy Scars, who have attained a rabid cult following over the course of 4 albums and 4 EPs, began in 2002 as a post-hardcore outfit, first gaining widespread critical attention with the release of their ‘Hospital Music for the Aesthetics of Language’ EP in 2004.

Numerous US tours, including the Vans Warped Tour in 2004, earned them a reputation as a formidable live act who throw everything they’ve got into their performances.

In 2008, the band was offered a support slot on a European tour with a high-profile UK band. A week before the tour was set to kick off, the headliner broke up, leaving Trophy Scars heavily in debt from lost airfares and other unrecoverable expenses, to the extent that the band was forced into an indefinite hiatus.

When their fans learned of the situation, the online message boards lit up. They were so devastated that they would never get to hear Trophy Scars next album, ‘Bad Luck’, that eventually fans started emailing the band, asking if the band had a PayPal account so that they could send money to the band to help keep the band alive. This act eventually became ‘The Bad Luck Foundation’, which raised enough money to enable the band to record the album, well before crowd-funding concepts like Kickstarter came into existence. The fans saved the band.

Over the years, Trophy Scars have evolved and broadened their sound while still maintaining their trademark energy and penchant for darkly gripping narratives.

Their fourth album and magnum opus, ‘Holy Vacants’, was released worldwide in April 2014 on Monotreme Records, garnering numerous 5-star reviews from around the world and paving the way for their long-awaited debut European tour.

To help the band raise funds for the tour, The first ever vinyl edition of their much-loved third album, ‘Bad Luck’, will be released on Monotreme Records as a limited 180 g pressing of 200 copies on black vinyl and 300 copies on clear red vinyl with black spatter. All profits from the sale will go directly to the band to support their touring and recording.
