65daysofstatic: New album, new label, lots of tour dates!

The end of an era has arrived, as we bid a fond farewell to the always awesome 65daysofstatic! Spending over half a decade working with them has been a huge pleasure. They are some of the most talented, hardworking and lovely people you could ever meet!

65daysofstatic's 4th studio album, 'We Were Exploding Anyway', will be released April 26th on Hassle Records in Europe and Zankyo Records in Japan. Anyone who has heard some of their new songs previewed in recent live shows will attest to the excellence that everyone can expect from the new album. One track even has guest vocals by a certain Mr R. Smith (hmm, wonder who that can be?!)

Big, big thanks to 65daysofstatic for the wonderful thrill of being a small part of their extraordinary sonic universe. And massive props to everyone who helped get their music out into the ears of the world - in particular, Scott Bartlett, whose dedication, affection and tireless efforts for the band played such a huge role in their success. Scott, you are a hero!! Also everyone else at Scream PR and the team at Rocket Radio who got the band so many Radio 1 sessions, I began to feel at home at Maida Vale studios! And Pete Spiby, the good people at Starkult PR (Germany), Fanatic PR (USA)Ghost PR (Italy) and Geert Mets at Konkurrent (Belgium), Debbie Clare, Tom Hopewell and Vuz 'The Vman'. Special thanks to Cargo Records UK for their support and enthusiasm.

Big props to Medlo too, for their rad videos done with very little time and even less money!

We are still selling the back catalog, so if you have yet to complete your collection...

We look forward to the further adventures of 65dos! Bring it on!! Our newest signings Nedry will be touring with 65dos in May, so be sure to turn up early if you go.

introducing Midas Fall!

It is with great pleasure we introduce you to our latest signings, Midas Fall from Edinburgh Scotland. Their beautiful debut album, "Eleven. Return And Revert" will be released worldwide on the 19th of April.

Midas Fall mix elements of post- and alternative rock with subtle progressive undertones, creating tense, shimmering soundscapes led by the melodically melancholic vocals of Elizabeth Heaton.

‘Eleven. Return and Revert’ is a diverse and mesmerising debut, with music oscillating between mellow and epic.

Formed in 2008, the band has previously self-released an EP, toured the UK and received national airplay, garnering them an enthusiastic and growing fan base.

Midas Fall will be touring the UK this spring. More dates TBA soon.

Great new videos by Barzin, Reigns and Jeniferever!

We're really pleased to have some excellent new videos to share with you!

Jeniferever - 'Green Meadow Island'

Jeniferever are currently touring in the UK / Europe. Here is the killer video for their song "Green Meadow island" from their new album 'Spring Tides', which is released this week. The video was recently debuted on the Drowned in Sound music website.

Reigns 'Everything Beyond These Walls Has been Razed'

Those incredibly clever and talented folks at Medlo and Phlegm Comics have teamed up once again to create a stunning animation for the Reigns track 'Everything Beyond These Walls Has been Razed' from their new album, 'The House On The Causeway', which is out now. Their last collaborative project for us was the truly wonderful 'Space Station' video for Aaron Stout, and Medlo themselves have been the creative brains behind all those fabulous 65daysofstatic videos you've loved over the years, and also the moody brilliance of The Low Lows' 'Dear Flies, Love Spider' video. We are very proud to be associated with their creative output!

The video was featured on the front page of The Daily Motion for a whole week and got over 14,000 plays!

Barzin - 'Nobody Told Me'

And another stunner for the track 'Nobody Told Me' by Barzin - the lushly gorgeous work of director Brian Harrington and camera person Lynda Hall. Feast your eyes and ears!

Jeniferever and 65daysofstatic new album pre-sales and tour dates!

After the excitement of the recent new Barzin, Stinking Lizaveta and Reigns releases, (all of which have been very well-received by the press, with all 3 bands still on tour this month!), you might think that we would be content to sit back and rest, but instead, we have two more stunning releases for you by two stunning bands coming out very soon...

We are super-thrilled to be releasing the new album 'Spring Tides' by Jeniferver (from Sweden)on the 13th of April worldwide except for the far east, where it will be released by Thomason Sound.

But if you are like the many people who wrote to us saying they just can't wait that long, you can pre-order the album now from our web shop, and we will ship it out by the 3rd of April. The album comes in a lovely deluxe digipak with some seriously beautiful artwork. And the music itself? Absolutely sublime!! All pre-orders will come with a free poster.

'Spring Tides' is already getting loads of press/radio attention all over - here in the UK, the track 'Green Meadow Island was recently 'single of the week' on Iain Baker's NME Radio show, and tracks will be featured on the covermount CDs of the next issues of Word Magazine and Rock Sound magazine. If you happen to be in Germany, look out for features in Visions Magazine and Sonic Seducer and a track on the covermount CD for Eclipsed Magazine. The album is also making a big splash on the blogosphere in the USA as the campaign starts up over there. And lots more to come, too!

Jeniferever's European release tour kicks off on the 1st of April in Germany and runs well into May, including a very special album launch show at The Luminaire in London on the 10th of April, with some nice treats and surprises for everyone. Please see our 'shows' page or the band's myspace page (myspace.com/jeniferever) for the latest dates, and keep checking, as more are being added.

Coming hard on the heels of the Jeniferever album is an absolute belter of a live album from homegrown heroes 65daysofstatic. You may recall that last year the band spent a few months on the road touring with The Cure in Europe and north America. The tour culminated in 2 great shows in new York City - at Madison Square Garden and Radio City Music Hall. These shows were recorded and mixed, and selected tracks will appear on the 'Escape From New York' live album, which is out on the 20th of April in Europe. Also during the tour, a video documentary, '65doc', was made by Version Industries, produced by Caspar Newbolt. A DVD of the documentary is also included in the 'Escape from New York' album, so you can catch a behind-the-scenes peek at what life on the road and onstage was like for the band. In case you are curious, here is a little preview - 'Radio Protector' live:

65daysofstatic - Radio Protector (Promo Cut) from monotreme records on Vimeo.

We are now taking pre-orders of the album, which will ship by the 10th of April. And of course, there will be loads of tour activity throughout April/May and into the summer festivals, so please check our shows page or the band's own website (www.65daysofstatic.com) for all the latest updates!

8th March 2009

8th April 2009 Lille, FR @ La Chimere

9th April 2009 Rennes, FR @ 1929

10th April 2009 Nantes, FR @ Le Lieu Unique

And here are a few press quotes for the new album:

"By creating such outlandish narratives, the British duo manage to both resurrect the idea of the album as an all-encompassing event and subvert the usual marketing of music, the relentless focus on the personalities behind the sounds. Plus, in addition to being extremely good at spinning a creepy yarn - MR James would surely be impressed - their music is quite excellent…. The effect of such
deeply affecting music allied to conceptual and lyrical content that is almost
absurdly dark, hinting at terrible events and states of appalling mental
anguish, is beguiling and not a little bizarre. At various times it's
difficult to know whether to laugh out loud, break down at the unbearable
poignancy of it all, or go and check all the rooms in the house armed with a
carving knife." (The Wire)

“A low-key blend of folk, neo-classical and prog noises (think John Cale’s productions for Nico with added beats and glitches) it acts as the perfect soundtrack to their spooky spoken-word lyrics.” (Uncut)

“There’s much more to this record than wide-eyed pastiche, with the resolutely sinister vocals occupying a similarly bleak landscape to Gravenhurst and the splashes of guitar evoking the best of Texan post-rock, but many of the sea-sick electronic textures could well have come straight from “Music Has The Right To Children”. Of course, that’s not necessarily a bad thing, and for those still mired in mid-winter depression, this should provide a fitting soundtrack.” (8/10) (Rock Sound - look out for the feature in the new issue too).

“Is that a candle being snuffed out? The scribbling nib of a lunatic poet? A piece of masking tape being ripped from a mouth? Quite possibly not. This is music that rewards the imaginative, the illogical and the ever-so-slightly insane.” (Time Out)

.“‘…Causeway’ is a bit like watching that part in ‘Poltergeist’ where the kid opens his eyes and the clown has left the seat. There’s that imminent sense of dread, knowing that it’s going to burst out at any moment. Except with ‘…Causeway’ there’s no burst, just a well crafted sense of almost pleasant uneasiness.” (Terrorizer)

'The House On The Causeway' is electronicmmusicians Reigns' third studio LP, and is the musical equivalent of a snowstorm in northern Russia. At times violent and at others frigidly cold and still, 'Causeway' is, ultimately, a beautiful scope of experimental electronic-folk seen through a broken kaleidoscope of monotone colour” (CMU Daily)....

From the epic melancholia of ‘Bad Slate’ to the spooky brilliance of ’Mirrors At Night’ and ’Vaulted’, Reigns are befuddling brilliant; the only real criticism with ‘The House On The Causeway’ is that it arrived too late for Halloween. Singing like they have collectively trapped their balls in a car door, these brothers Grimm fashion a compellingly aeriform racket that is far more heartfelt and considered than the majority of today’s numbing indie flotsam. Ghostly ambience, distorted vocals and eerie electronics segue beautifully into instrumental breaks of folky melodica and chilling stabs of piano, the whole package unfurling with an ethereal grandeur that charms and unsettles in equal measure. (Canned Applause)

It's spooky, it's challenging and it's as close to an out of body experience as you'll get this side of Most Haunted. It's also one of the most original albums you'll hear all year. (The Devil Has The Best Tuna)....

Evocative, thoughtful, and serious, The House On The Causeway is a
fantastic new story from Reigns that shows a further maturation in their
sound. Add to that the morose mood of the subject matter that touches me in all
the right spots, and I have a nigh-on perfect album in my hands. (Autothrall)

"Reigns supremely good album." (4/5) (Subba-Cultcha)

Aaron Stout R.I.P. (1979 - 2009)

Dear friends,

It is with unbearable grief that I must tell you that my wonderful and talented friend Aaron Stout was involved in a car accident in Indiana on Thursday and passed away on Friday.

He was 29 years old.

I have lost a lovely friend and the world has lost a very talented artist who, had he been allowed to stay longer on this earth, would have undoubtedly continued to make some truly amazing music.

Aaron made such an impact on my life with his beautiful, soulful music, his kind heart and his unlimited enthusiasm and dedication to his art.

His bright intelligence and infectious laugh raised my spirits so many times when they were flagging. I just can't imagine the world without him. I know it is going to take some time before I can even try to do that. His soul will always live on through the beautiful music and warm memories.

My heart goes out to his family and friends.

Peace be with you.

65DAYSOFSTATIC RELEASE ‘ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK’ CD/DVD on 20 April!!

Newsfeed from 65daysofstatic!! :)

On the 20th April 2009, we’ll be releasing a double disc 65daysofstatic album.

What’s on disc one?
Ten tracks of 65daysofstatic playing live in New York, recorded at both Madison Square Garden and (the actually far more atmospheric) Radio City Music Hall.

What’s on disc two?
A 75 minute road movie comprised of some face-frying live footage from various shows in the US, from large arenas to little roadside bars, spliced with somewhat self-absorbed interviews and quite a lot of footage of us killing time and generally having fun or being tired in the giant playgrounds of America and Europe. It looks, sounds and tastes good, even if we don’t.

If that looks and sounds like something you’d like to watch while you’re waiting for The Dark Knight to re-seed on a torrent, then you will be able to purchase it through the normal channels (record shops & merchstands), and the audio will be available on iTunes and all the other less-monopolising digital outlets, courtesy of the mighty Monotreme Records, our home since 2003.
Hopefully it will serve to distract from the fact that we have failed to complete our fourth and probably final (only kidding, this is all we got) album, despite having written over TWO MILLION SONGS and conducting regular bareknuckle fistfights. But we are getting there slowly. Or are we?

Stinking Liz Return with Sixth Disc and tour Europe!!

We’re not worthy! We’re not worthy! But we get to release this album anyway – woo hoo!!!!

One of America 's most durable and powerful rock bands is back with its sixth album. Stinking Lizaveta's "Sacrifice and Bliss" is the latest from the instrumental trio specializing in what one reviewer calls "insane improvisations, relentless rhythms and volumes of groove." If you're tired of the stale sludge that passes for modern metal, the sparkling crunch of Stinking Liz's latest will restore your faith in
rock and roll

The LA Times has hailed the veteran rockers as "both polished and unruly," and "Sacrifice and Bliss" excels on both counts with crisp production, massive beats, and dazzling fretwork. Like crazed Russian composer Alexander Scriabin artfully
deconstructing and reconstructing melody, guitarist Yanni Papadopoulos'
squealing, singing lines soar above brother Alexi's churning electric upright
bass. Drummer Agusta holds it all together with a pounding that's one part Elvin Jones and another part John Bonham. Mixed with the masterful production of Sanford Parker (Pelican, Rwake, Nachtmystium), "Sacrifice and Bliss" shows a heavy rock trio at its absolute best.

Born in the basements of ..West Philadelphia.. and tempered by fifteen years of
American and European tours, Stinking Liz has built a reputation as one of progressive metal's most unique and captivating live acts. "Sacrifice
and Bliss" captures that power. Real rock and roll is not a video game.

Real rock and roll is not the latest pass at this year's formula. Real rock and roll is Stinking Lizaveta.

The album is out on the 16th
of February in Europe on Monotreme and the 31st of March in ..north America.. on At A Loss.

The band will tour ..Europe.. in March/April with End Of Level Boss.

Jeniferever sign to Monotreme Records!!

We can’t even begin to tell you how excited and pleased we are to announce that the wonderful Swedish band Jeniferever have signed to Monotreme Records! If you have yet to hear their staggeringly beautiful music, we suggest that you rush right over to their
myspace page and check them out, and also add them as your friends.

Their second album, ‘Spring Tides’ will be released on the 13th of April on Monotreme Records worldwide, apart from Japan, Taiwan and Hong Kong, where it will be released on the Japanese label Thomason Sound.

We are so excited to be getting this album out into the world! We have had it on repeat play for months now and still can’t get enough of it.

You can hear a few of the tracks from the album on their myspace player and you can download a free mp3 of the track ‘Green Meadow Island’ here.

Their lovely debut album, “Choose A Bright Morning”, was released in 2006 on Drowned In Sound Recordings in The UK and Midfinger in Italy. We are very proud to say that Monotreme will also be re-issuing this album in the spring.

Both albums will also be released on vinyl by denovali records in Germany.

The band will be touring all over Europe this spring, so if any of you promoters are reading this and would like to put them on, please get in touch with us at (tours{at}monotremerecords{dot}com. We caught them live in November at the Tanned Tin Festival in Spain, where they headlined the final day of the festival and were one of only two bands in the entire festival to be permitted an encore. They also toured the UK with iLiKETRAiNS last month and previewed a few of the songs from the new album, which sounded brilliant. Make sure you catch them live if you can!

So please tune in or if you miss it, you can listen again online.

Monotreme Records to release new album by Reigns!

We are bursting with pride to inform you that Monotreme Records has signed one of our favourite bands to the label – Reigns. We have been fans of this UK band for several years, and when they sent us their brilliant 3rd album, ‘The House On The Causeway’, we were absolutely thrilled! Their previous two albums were released on the excellent Jonson Family Records, and received lots of critical praise and were championed by the likes of John Peel, Steve Lamacq and Huw Stephens.

The album will be released on the 9th of March in Europe, and the 17th of March outside of Europe. There will be some tour dates in the UK and mainland Europe between the 9th – 22nd of March, so please get in touch with us at (tours{at}monotremerecords{dot}com) if you’d like to help them out with a show.

You can find an mp3 of the track ‘Everything Beyond These Walls Has Been Razed’ from the new album here.

Barzin’s third album to be released in February!!

We are tremendously happy to announce that Barzin’s third full-length album, ‘Notes To An Absent Lover’ has been completed and will be released on the 16th of February in Europe.

And we can tell you that it was well worth the wait, as it is absolutely gorgeous!. Broken-hearted songs have never sounded so beautiful…

You can download an mp3 of the track ‘Stayed Too Long In This Place’ here.

We recently had the pleasure of seeing the band perform some of the new material at the Tanned Tin festival, and it was so good that we can hardly wait for them to return for their full European tour in March/April! If anyone is interested in booking the band during this period, please get in touch with us at (tours{at}monotremerecords{dot}com).

New artist on Monotreme Records – Okie Rosette!

We are really excited to tell you that this September we will be releasing the debut album by San Francisco’s Okie Rosette. This is the new band of Felix Costanza, who was the front man of the critically admired band Granfaloon Bus for over a decade. We were (and still are) massive fans of Granfaloon Bus – some of you may remember that we booked a few UK solo shows for Felix Costanza back in 2003.

Okie Rosette’s debut album, ‘Leap Second’ will be released in Europe on the 1st of September, and the band will be on tour in the second half of October. We should have some dates for you soon.

The Lows Lows fantastic new album, ‘Shining Violence’ is out now in Europe on Monotreme Records! You can buy it from our shop (see 'catalog page') or from the lovely Norman Records (www-dot-normanrecords-dot-com)or from other fine shops and websites such as Boomkat-dot-com.

The album will also be released in North America in June on Misra Records (Phosphorescent, Great Lake Swimmers, South San Gabriel, Shearwater)

The band will be playing at various SXSW events this coming week, so be sure to check them out if you are going to SXSW, as they are awesome live.

They will also be interviewed by XfM radio for a special on SXSW

Next month, they return to Europe, where they will tour in 9 countries and record their second radio session for VPRO in Amsterdam. See the shows page for tour dates - more coming soon.

Here are a few of the press quotes so far for ‘Shining Violence’:

"A rousing feedback-laden treat… Threaded with steel guitar, their cosmic leanings follow a host of unusual sidetrips, including a terrific cover of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ “Modern Romance”." -Uncut

“an interesting, clever and affecting album…Shining Violence’s mood is atmospheric and ethereal. In singer Parker Noon, The Low Lows have an extraordinary secret weapon. When he emerges from the stew of noise his band are cooking up, the effect is stunning and frequently heartbreaking …if the thought of a mashup between Gram Parsons and Flying Saucer Attack is appealing, this quietly intriguing record may be for you.” –Clash Magazine

The Cocteau Twins meet The Jesus and Mary Chain somewhere in the mid west perhaps…sounds like it could be the soundtrack to ‘Wild at Heart.’ –Subbacultcha

There's a varied line-up of instrumentation on Shining Violence, calling upon lapsteel and other such country staples as well as brass sections, all of which is put to highly effective use on the lovely 'Disappear', a distorted ballad that fuses Jesus & Mary Chain fuzz with Calexico-style composition. Elsewhere the psyched boogie woogie of 'Five Ways I Didn't Die' spells a ghostly hoedown, while 'Raining In Eva' sets a course for sheer slowcore beauty. Excellent. -Boomkat

Aaron Stout Feature on NPR's Second Stage Programme

Aaron Stout will be featured on NPR's 'All Songs Considered' Second Stage internet program This Tuesday.

More about 'Second Stage':

"If you love music and love finding great artists none of your friends probably know about, then spend some time with Second Stage. Second Stage is where we share the best of the great unknowns. We've had some remarkable artists start out on Second Stage (back when it was still called Open Mic). Sufjan Stevens is one of them. We were also lucky enough to discover Regina Spektor early on and put her on the show. Jesca Hoop was another great discovery."

The show will feature a review of the track "Fountain of Youth" from Aaron's wonderful "Queens Live In Caskets" album. The track will be streamed on the website and included in their podcast, which you can access any time from Tuesday onwards online here:

Members of Cerberus Shoal in new project to be released on Young God Records

A new band featuring several members of Cerberus Shoal has been born - it is called Fire on Fire. Their debut ep will be released by Young God Records (Swans, Angels of Light, Lisa Germano, Akron / Family) on November 15th. It will only be available at www.younggodrecords.com or through the band at live concerts.

"As a reaction to the stress and pressures of the Cerberus Shoal system Chriss Sutherland, Caleb Mulkerin and Colleen Kinsella formed the group Fire on Fire in 2004 while CS was very active. With this group, the founding members of CS were working with a relatively clean creative slate, something they hadn’t had for many years. So… focusing on the enjoyment of playing rather than the production of music this group quickly took flight with the addition of Micah Blue
Smaldone on upright bass and banjo as well as Tom Kovacevic (CS 1997-99) playing oud, Nay and percussion. All the members of Fire on Fire have a hand in the singing as this is a very vocal group with five talented singers and songwriters. Considered, locally in Portland (Me.), as a kind of super group, Fire on Fire is three parts Cerberus Shoal, one part tarpigh and one part Micah Blue Smaldone. All five people live together in a blue house across from green oil tanks. Mulkerin and Sutherland have inhabited this house since 1995, Kovacevic since 1998, Kinsella since 2000 and Smaldone since 2004. Fire on Fire unlike CS, which wrote all of its music together/collectively, is more like the song circle idea with each person bringing their own material, with this group we were much looser and looking for an easier musical time."

BARZIN S/T ALBUM RE-ISSUE!

Several years ago, Barzin released their *gorgeous* debut album, entitled 'Barzin'. We wore out several CD players listening to it, and we still can't get enough of its graceful, melancholy beauty. The album was originally available in Europe (mainly France and Italy) as a limited release on the fine French label Ocean Music, but has been unavailable for a few years now in Europe, other than as an import from the Canadian label Where Are My Records. We are very pleased to tell you that Monotreme will re-issue the album throughout Europe on the 5th of November. To celebrate the re-issue, we have designed all new artwork for the album. And very lovely it is, too! You can take a look and download a free mp3 here: http://www.monotremerecords.com/barzin/st.php

The album will also be released digitally for the first time - worldwide on Monotreme.

And more great news - Barzin are going into the studio soon to begin work on their third album, which should be out in autumn 2008! We will keep you posted.

Check out Barzin on myspace and add them as a friend: www.myspace.com/barzinh

Stinking Lizaveta's first Euro tour - with The Hidden Hand!

Stinking Lizaveta have begun their first ever tour of mainland Europe! The Hidden Hand invited the band to come along as main support for their 4-week tour, so following their month-long tour of the USA, they hopped on a plane to Germany and will be giving many people on the continent their first taste of the band’s famously awesome live shows.

They will be selling copies of their brilliant new album 'Scream Of The Iron Iconoclast' - their 5th and best album, which comes the closest yet to capturing the energy and sound of their live performances. The album was recorded by Steve Albini at his Electrical Audio Studios. Stinking Lizaveta's first album "...hopelessness and shame" was also recorded by Steve Albini - in his basement. ‘Scream Of The Iron Iconoclast’ is out this week in mainland Europe and out on the 7th of May in the UK. It is also out now in North America on At A Loss Recordings

The band will also play a few headline shows in the UK after their tour with The Hidden Hand. Check the 'shows' page for tour dates - some have changed since previous postings.

We caught the band's shows at SXSW in March and at the Roadburn Festival yesterday, and they were mind-blowingly great, so please come out and see them if you can!

Recent Press for Stinking Lizaveta:

“Stinking Lizaveta proved to be the Chinatown of instrumental rock: an example of knowing both your abilities and artform so thoroughly that, by unleashing such raw power, you destroy the genre for a generation, leaving behind the charred wreckage for any fool who dares to follow in Lizaveta’s steps” (-The Other Paper - live review of April show in Columbus, Ohio)

“With one spiritual foot in Big Black, and the other in Miles Davis’ mid-70’s electric shows in Japan, Stinking Liz are brutal and sublime. –Music Emissions (‘Scream of The Iron Iconoclast’)”

“A superb set of dark, heavy brooding music embellished on occasion with stunning individual virtuoso moments.
- Peacedogman (‘Scream Of The Iron Iconoclast’)”

“They play heroic heavy metal jams with actual melodies and grooves… their best record in ten years.” - LA Today

Also, just a reminder that Thee More Shallows' wonderful new album 'Book Of Bad Breaks' is out this coming week on Anticon, and the band is currently touring in the UK. After that they do a month of tour dates in the USA. So go see a show, buy the album and help them get really *big* like they deserve to be!

65daysofstatic takes on the world with new releases and tours!

This spring/summer sees some MAJOR excitement here at Monotreme, including 2 new releases and some world-wide touring by 65daysofstatic.

The new 3-track single by 65daysofstatic, ‘Don’t Go Down to Sorrow’, is out now!

The CD single contains an edited version of ‘Don’t Go Down to Sorrow’ from their forthcoming album, plus new track ‘Morning in The Knife Quarter’ and a new version of The Major Cites of the World Are Being Destroyed One by One by the Monsters. You can check out a stream of the single track on our myspace page (www.myspace.com/monotremerecords)

There is also an excellent new video for the single, produced by those oh-so-clever and talented Medlo folks (www.medlo.net). The video can be found on the Medlo site, right here on our 65daysofstatic news/contacts page, our myspace page (www.myspace.com/monotremerecords, and YouTube. Watch out for it on MTV and ORGAN TV, too.

And on the 30th of April, the stunning third album by 65daysofstatic, ‘The Destruction Of Small Ideas’, will be released. We can’t say enough great things about this album. We’re not worthy! We’re not worthy!

The band has just returned from a short tour of Japan and Russia, and this week they head out for some UK dates, followed by mainland Europe and more UK dates. The first three shows this week are with 65dos pals and Monotreme favourites Youthmovies (newly signed to Drowned in Sound), plus Cats & Cats & Cats. And then later in the tour, the band will be joined by none other than Josh T Pearson(!) and also The Miramar Disaster and Rolo Tomassi. So be sure to get there early if you go and see them.

And we are also very proud and excited to announce that 65daysofstatic has been selected by the fans attending this year’s ATP festival as one of the ‘fans’ choice’ bands to play the festival, coming in ahead of bands including Eels, Melt Banana, Why?, Hot Chip, Calexico… Wow!

So it’s going to be a very busy spring for 65daysofstatic! To find out where they will be playing, check our ‘shows’ page or, better yet, subscribe to the 65days mailing list on their website for all of the latest, and keep an eye on their tour diary at www.65daysofstatic.com .

In the summer the band will embark on their first North American tour – details to be announced very soon!

The Low Lows: tour, videos, radios sessions

The Low Lows are touring mainland Europe right now and will be back in the UK for several dates on the 7th, when they will play at Time Out London's venue of the year, The Luminaire.

While over on the mainland, the band played the Music In Mind Festival in Belgium, and also recorded two radio sessions: one for the excellent Duyster Programme at Studio Brussel, which is up now here: http://www.stubru.be/stubru_master/muziek/audio/lowlows_itvssi/index.html

The other session was recorded today for the esteemed Dutch VPRO radio DWARS programme. We aren't sure when that will air yet.

There will be a great new 2-track single, Elizabeth Pier, out on the 26th of March. This single also has the 'Dear Flies, Love Spider' video on it. The band will have copies to sell on their UK dates, and you can also buy it from our website shop. See the shows page for a list of their tour dates.

The wonderfully talented French filmmaker Vincent Moon, who made Barzin's 'Leaving Time' video, (and also worked with the National and Jamie Liddell) is also becoming very well-known for his 'takeaway shows', in which he films bands who are visiting Paris, often in unusual and unconventional settings around the city. The results are posted on his Blogtheque website http://www.blogotheque.net/takeawayshows/ (or http://www.blogotheque.net/concertaemporter/ if you'd rather read it all in French…)

In November, during the last Low Lows Tour, he filmed two segments by The Low Lows, one in which they stroll into an elegant old Parisian bar and perform a new song, 'Black Bees', and another in which they spontaneously invade a city bus with an acoustic rendition of 'Dear Flies, Love Spider' that even has the passengers getting in on the act!. The results are captivating. If you look carefully you will see a small cameo by Barzin, who held the mic for them.

Thee More Shallows make a big move!

We have a new website! Many thanks to Paul Wolinski and Paul Filmer for making it happen. The new site is more user friendly, with easy links for our shop, band bios, mp3s, photos etc. And a new page just for tour dates, which you can bookmark to keep up to date on the latest shows. See shows link above...

So please have a look around and let us know what you think. We lost some of our mailing list contacts recently when we changed servers, so if you or anyone you know should be getting our mailouts and isn’t, please re-subscribe using the form on our ‘contacts’ page.

And some sad but also exciting news, as we say a great big thank you and a very fond farewell to Thee More Shallows. Their debut album, ‘A History of Sport Fishing’, was the first release by Monotreme Records in 2002, and was followed by another album, ‘More Deep Cuts’ in 2004, and two eps, ‘Cuts Plus Two’ and ‘Monkey vs Shark’, all of which received great critical acclaim. A highlight for us all was when the band recorded an amazing session for BBC Radio 1’s Rob da Bank show at Maida Vale studios in summer 2005. Thee More Shallows will release a new album called ‘The Book of Bad Breaks’ on the groundbreaking Anticon label worldwide on the 24th of April. We believe and hope that this move will be a ‘good break’ for a band who deserves much more attention! Tour plans are being finalised for Europe / UK in April. Monotreme will still carry the first four CDs by the band. Please buy a copy of their new album, they are an awesome band who deserves your support.

Barzin Belgian radio session aired this week plus lots of news...

The Low Lows and Barzin are wrapping up their European tours this week. The tours have gone very well and the response has been wonderful. Big thanks to everyone who has helped out with shows, etc. Special thanks to Keith Duncan and Matt Shrimpton, the most brilliant tour managers in the universe.

Last weekend Barzin recorded a session of 4 songs for the awesome Duyster radio programme on Studio Brussel radio in Belgium. They also recorded an interview with Barzin. The session will air tonight (Sunday the 19th) between 11-12 local time (10-11 pm GMT, 5-6 pm Eastern Time). The session will also be available to listen to online here for a week.

To accompany the Barzin tour, there is a new Barzin ep released this week in mainland Europe. The ‘Just More Drugs’ ep contains the track ‘Just More Drugs’ from the ‘My Life In Rooms’ album, plus radio session tracks from London’s wonderful Resonance FM Glass Shrimp programme, recorded on their UK tour last spring (‘Let’s Go Driving’ and ‘Just More Drugs’), plus a Canadian radio session track of a Tindersticks cover, ‘Mistakes’ and a new song, ‘Queen Jane’. The ep is also available to order from the Monotreme Records shop.

Barzin have also recorded a cover of the Sparklehorse song ‘Sad & Beautiful World’, which will appear on a Sparklehorse tribute compilation album on Slight Records next year. Daniel Johnston, Levi Fuller, and Racing Paper Planes are also scheduled to appear on the compilation.

French video director Vincent Moon, known for his work with The National and Jamie Liddell, has just finished filming a video for the Barzin song ‘Leaving Time’. The video will premiere soon on popular US music website Stereogum.

The Low Lows were also featured on NPR’s ‘All Songs Considered’ in the US this month, and have a track on the covermount CD in the next issue of French Rolling Stone magazine. Their labelmates, Aaron Stout, also have a track in the magazine’s current issue, along with a glowing review.

The new albums by Aaron Stout and The Low Lows are now out in Europe on Monotreme and are available from our website shop.

The North American releases of 65daysofstatic’ ‘One Time For All Time’, Lower Forty-Eight’s ‘Apertures’ (US and Canada) and Barzin’s ‘My Life In Rooms (US only) are out now. 65daysofstatic have made the top 200 CMJ charts 3 weeks running. Also, the Barzin track “Let’s Go Driving” has been on popular blog aggregator site www.elbo.ws top track list for two weeks running.

Studio news!

Stinking Lizaveta have wrapped up the recording of their new album with their old friend Steve Albini, who recorded their first album in his basement a dozen years ago. Fans of the band who have previously found the recording quality of their albums disappointing compared to their live performances can rest assured that this one will own! We can’t wait to get this album out! The album will be released this spring (late March/early April) and the band will undertake their first European tour with Southern Lord band the Hidden Hand. They will also do some headline dates in Europe (TBC). The dates with The Hidden Hand are in the shows page.

65daysofstatic go in to the studio next month to record their third album. They are pulling out all the stops on this one, so expect something truly MONUMENTAL – the demos we have heard are killer!! The album will be released at the end of April and the band will be touring extensively to promote it, so look out for the latest tour date updates on their website. More about this soon…

Thee More Shallows are also in the studio wrapping up recording of their third album. No release date has been scheduled as yet, but likely to be this spring. We should have an update on this soon. The demos are sounding utterly fantastic… soon the long wait will be over!

The Low Lows are already putting the finishing touches on their second album (release date TBA) Many of the songs were previewed during their current tour, and the response to the live performances has been tremendous. Yet another one to save a slot in your ‘best of 2007’ list for… One UK promoter described their set as ‘one of the most visceral live performances I have ever seen’. They will return to Europe in Late Feb / March for some tour dates and festival appearances, so if you missed them this time around you will have another chance soon.

We hope to get Aaron Stout over for a tour early next year, with or without backing band. Stay tuned for more news about this.

Everyones’ favourite ‘Casio Grindcore’ monsters, Trencher, have a new full length album, ‘Lips’, out now on Southern Records. It’s their first album for the label, so show them some support and go out and buy it!

We will have more news soon about other label activities, including a long-awaited North American release of Ral Partha Vogelbacher’s ‘Shrill Falcons’.

Mono-23 Aaron Stout – ‘Queens Live In Caskets’ CD album

Mono-24 The Low Lows ‘Fire On The Bright Sky’ CD album

‘Queens Live In Caskets’ is the self-produced debut album of the Indiana-born, Brooklyn-based folk-rock artist Aaron Stout. Already it is drawing very favourable comparisons to contemporaries such as M Ward, Sufjan Stevens, Cass McCombs and Papa M, among others. You can read more about Aaron Stout, including some great reviews that have come in, and listen to some music here.

'Fire On The Bright Sky' is the debut album from The Low Lows, an Athens GA trio formed from the embers of the critically acclaimed NYC dream-pop quartet Parker & Lily after Lily Wolfe’s resignation in 2005. It’s a radiant, desperate prom-night of a record, in which stark southern sweetness gives way unexpectedly to great storms of guitar noise. Sheets of dissonance and singer P.L. Noon's arcing wail conjure Galaxie 500 or Electr-O-Pura era Yo La Tengo, while bright walls of country narcosis à la My Morning Jacket crumble into climactic, stomping feedback and lush, sad balladry.

Some excellent reviews have also come in for The Low Lows – you can read more about the band and sample some music here. The Low Lows will tour the UK and Europe in November. We still have some dates to fill, so please get in touch if you can help sort a gig for them.

6th March 2003

Hello there. Thanks for stopping by. We plan to have the first two Monotreme releases out in May:

A 7" ep by Ral Partha Vogelbacher, 'Whistle Like You Mean It', with a handmade letterpressed sleeve, designed and pressed by the artist himself! The ep contains three lo-fi songs of gentle oddball whimsy that offer a glimpse into a world where angels' overworked fingers absorb the heat away from hummingbird brains and "the sunshine will find you like every other well-funded marketing ploy." An exclusive track by Ral Partha Vogelbacher, 'The Wrong Bike', appears in the compilation CD accompanying the Winter 2002 issue of 'Comes With A Smile' Magazine, which is out now. And if all of this sounds appealing you will want to check out Ral Partha Vogelbacher's first full-length CD / vinyl album, 'The More Nice Fey Elven Gnomes Are Hiding In My Toilet Again', available now from Megalon Records. 'Comes With A Smile' magazine described this album as "24 minutes of beguiling, memorable kookiness…the problem brain-child of Chadwick Bidwell and associates…the secret twins of M Ward and Will Oldham".

As if that isn't more than enough to be excited about, we also have the honour of being chosen to release the brilliant debut album of a band that is bound to win the hearts and ears of anyone who loves beautifully crafted songs with quiet melancholy vocals, soaring strings and chiming guitars. The album is 'A History of Sport Fishing' by Thee More Shallows, from San Francisco.

Later in the year we plan to release a CD mini-album by Waterworks as well as another project by Ral Partha Vogelbacher.

If you would like to be kept up to date on all of our releases, you can join our mailing list by sending an email to news@monotremerecords.com, including the word 'subscribe' in the subject of the message.
